ABOUT ME
I came into this world the grandchild of two strong grandmothers. One was a seamstress and the other, a clothing store owner. My grandmothers were like night and day; they loved me differently and lived their lives differently. Although there was a distinction between them, they had one thing in common: a love of fashion. My paternal grandmother taught me about beautiful fabrics and the perfect stitch; whereas, my maternal grandmother taught me about bright colors and the art of putting together an outfit. While my grandmothers showed me about being bold, the world I saw was full of white shirts and boring clothes. Everyone was dressed alike, scared to make a fashion mistake, confined to fashion like a bird in a cage. It was at that moment that I decided to create a brand. It would fill the void of what I thought was missing in fashion. However, simply designing t-shirts was not fulfilling. It was when I was satisfying an order for family reunion t-shirts that I decided my purpose was much deeper than that. After struggling with my own body image, I decided to create an organization that shifts the narrative of what is considered the standard of beauty in women. My goal is to reinforce positive body images in women, especially those residing predominantly in communities of color. Thus, The Thick Girl Gang was born. The plan of The Thick Girl Gang is to not only decrease body dysmorphic ideas, but to also increase self esteem and change the negative ways we see ourselves. We are beautiful, we are amazing and we can do anything! And always remember, “You did not wake up this morning to hate your thighs!”
